There’s been a trend that’s been happening over the last couple of years called “deconstruction.” Have you heard of it? It’s when Christians determine there is room to question Biblical authority and take apart previously held beliefs and no longer identify as Christians. This gives us even more reason to dig down and know what we believe and why we believe it in order to identify deconstructionists and false teaching.
Alisa Childers is an author, speaker and life-long student of the Bible who desires to equip Christians to identify the core beliefs of historic Christianity, discern its counterfeits and proclaim the gospel with clarity, kindness, and truth. She has written two books that I’ve read that have really helped me to identify the core beliefs of the Bible and speak its Truth to others: one is “Another Gospel?” and the second is “Living Your Truth and Other Lies.” I will share with you my thoughts on my most recent read “Another Gospel?”
Alisa grew up in a faithful home, with parents deeply rooted in the Jesus Movement. As the back cover states “she had seen her mom and dad feed the hungry, clothe the homeless and love the outcast.” (If you have seen the film “The Jesus Revolution,” her father was one of the members of the band featured at the church where the Calvary church movement started.) She had dedicated her own life to leading worship as part of the Christian band ZOEgirl.
It seems like it would be difficult to disrupt someone’s faith, but Alisa experienced it from her pastor. She began going to a church that had solid preaching, but when she was invited to attend the pastor’s small group (by invitation only), she discovered his way of asking questions to create doubt in why she believed what she believed. When she would counter his questions with the truth of scripture, he would easily twist it to make her wonder if the Bible was really true! This led to a very serious faith crisis that led her on the journey she took over several years as she wrestled with questions that struck at the core of the Christian faith and found the truth. The result is “Another Gospel?”
Alisa’s book provides background information about how the scriptures were compiled, the verification of scripture with historical and archaeological facts and a deeper understanding. From the book jacket: “In a culture of endless questions, you need solid answers.” This book is strong, theologically sound and supports what the Apostle Paul said in Galatians 1:8 “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you another gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse.” This will help you identify the core beliefs of historic Christianity, discern its counterfeits and proclaim the gospel with clarity, kindness, and truth.
Guard your heart and be confident of this, “that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
