As we begin a new year, I want to encourage us to focus on having a “teachable spirit.”
I don’t know what 2025 held for you, but I have a feeling there were some struggles and bumps along the way. I pray you didn’t just go through those times, but that you grew through them. That is why I want to share a recent devotional of mine on this subject.
“Come to Me with a teachable spirit, eager to be changed. A close walk with Me is a life of continual newness. Do not cling to the old ways. Instead, seek My Face with an open mind, know that your journey with Me involves being transformed by the renewing of your mind. As you focus your thoughts on Me, be aware that I am fully attentive to you. I see you with a steady eye, because my attention span is infinite. I know and understand you completely; My thoughts embrace you in everlasting Love. I also know the plans I have for you; plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Give yourself fully to this adventure of increasing attentiveness to My Presence.”
I think many times when we hear, “do not cling to the old ways,” we think of our sinful past. But I want us to think of it in a different way, of not clinging to our old ways of dealing with things. We may have a habit of dealing with things on our own, or allowing our emotions to get the best of us and not allowing God to handle the situation. I want to encourage you to start 2026 out with a “teachable spirit,” asking God to handle this situation instead of trying to deal with it on your own. Ask Him what He wants you to learn through the situation. I think we as pastors’ wives are all guilty of thinking we can figure it out or that we should have all the answers, when in reality we should just be still and ask God what He wants to teach us through the situation. I love the part of the devotional, “be aware that I am fully attentive to you.” He knows what is best for us and we don’t have to have all the answers or know how to handle a situation, because He has our best interest in mind and He will fight our battles.
