But I wonder if this deep rooted cautionary way of thinking passed on from generation to generation hasn’t caused us to miss out on some of God’s greatest blessings. I wonder what the implications would be if when a child went outside to play instead of being told to “be careful,” they were told to “pay attention.” “Pay attention” carries with it the loving caution of “be careful,” but with subtle shift. A shift of thinking that if it becomes a habit has the potential of taking us places that, being careful will never take us.
I am not talking about reckless abandonment but developing the habit of paying attention to the God given potential of situations and circumstances that He puts in our life.
In Dr. Henry Blackaby’s classis study “Experiencing God,” he writes that the first principle to Experiencing God is to understand that God is always at work around you. I wonder how many times I have been oblivious to God’s work because I was “being careful” instead of “paying attention.”
It has taken me a long time to get to this point in my life, but from now on I’m going to pay attention instead of being careful. I think this is a critical shift if I’m going to enjoy and benefit from the rest of my journey.
Stay tuned for more…..
